Ave Maria

This piece was made from Venetian smalti with the traditional hammer and hardie used by the great mosaic artists of the Byzantine era in Ravenna Italy. It is a sectional copy of a piece depicting the Virgin from one of the classic mosaics of that time.

Students of mosaic art who come to Ravenna for classes are invited to create reproductions of small sections of the many phenomenal mosaics to be found in the basilicas of this beautiful city today. Only traditional tools and materials are used.
